SEBASTIAN – Capt Hiram’s will be having their 6th Annual River Challenge Triathlon, to Benefit our Indian River Lagoon, on November 18th, 2018 beginning at 7:30 a.m.
Triathletes of all ages and skill levels will be swimming, biking and running. The River Challenge Triathlon was established to benefit the overall health of the Lagoon and to raise awareness.
Some of the issues that the Indian River lagoon faces are diminishing populations of sea life and seagrass, which are both essential to its ecosystem.
“This race holds a special place in my heart. It is a mini-triathlon, dreamed up six years ago as a fun way to contribute to keeping our Indian River Lagoon in good health. We believe it is a fight worth fighting and that it really should be a priority for everyone who enjoys the water and the animals that live in it. We have introduced countless people to our little stretch of paradise through this race, many of whom have become strong activists for our cause. We are proud of our accomplishments so far, but there is still so much more to be done. If you want to be part of the solution, get involved locally. The Capt. Hiram’s River Challenge is a perfect way to get started,” Will Collins, President of Capt Hiram’s Resort, said in a statement.
Over the past five years, the River Challenge Triathlon has raised $15,000. These proceeds have been distributed to the following key environmental groups: The Ocean Research and Conservation Association, CCA, the Coastal Conservation Association of Florida, ORCA, and the Environmental Learning Center, to benefit the lagoon.
The River Challenge Triathlon will include a 1/4 mile swim, a 12-mile bike ride, and a 3-mile run. Then, there will be a post-race party at the Capt Hiram’s Sandbar Beach Club. The post-race party will include an awards ceremony, live music, brunch, cocktails.
The focus for this year’s triathlon is to have a single-use-plastic free race by eliminating styrofoam plates, water bottles, plastic cups. Additionally, Capt Hiram’s resort will be incorporating these changes throughout their business.
