A team from the National Weather Service in Melbourne will visit Micco and the Barefoot Bay area to determine if a tornado touched down before going offshore through the Sebastian Inlet.
A funnel cloud was seen in Sebastian and Vero Lake Estates moments after a tornado warning was issued Sunday at approximately 5:35 p.m.
According to the Brevard County Fire Rescue, between 30 and 35 homes were damaged by winds in Micco and Barefoot Bay as the storms moved east. The roof from one home was blown completely off by high winds, which neighbors feel was a tornado touching down.
“It touched down alright. Lifted up the truck and set it back down,” said Jeff Gage.
A marina called Cay Marine in Micco had some boats moved and possibly damaged by the storm.
There were no signs of a tornado in Sebastian, but there was scattered debris from storm winds. Many residents saw a noticeable funnel cloud as it moved northeast into Micco, where it may have touched down.
“We had some wicked wind and hail here in the Highlands, a few branches down off our oak trees, but no damage, thankfully,” said Sebastian resident Claudia Benn.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) said one boater died after being struck by lightning in the area of Pineda Causeway and U.S. 1. in Melbourne.
The person killed has not yet been identified as of Monday morning.
