Indian River County Bridges Open, Evacuation Order Lifted

Based on the 11:00 a.m. update from the National Hurricane Center and the National Weather Service in Melbourne, the Emergency Operations Center has now opened the bridges/causeways to the barrier island and lifted the mandatory evacuation order in Indian River County.

Shelters will remain open until the morning hours of Wednesday, September 4th, 2019.

“We continue to experience and expect tropical storm force winds in our area, and the choice to stay in the shelter or return home will be left up to each family. Low category 1 force gusts remain possible, with most of the winds and rain projected to subside by the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 4, 2019,” Indian River County officials said in a statement.

Hurricane Dorian is now a Category 2 with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph. Dorian is about 105 miles of Fort Pierce, Florida. The hurricane is moving northwest at 2 mph.

Florida Power and Light are reporting less than one hundred homes in Indian River County without power as of 11:20 a.m.

The Emergency Operations Center has encouraged all businesses in Indian River County to remain closed. The School District of Indian River County has cancelled classes through Wednesday, September 4, 2019. GoLine and all public transportation has ceased.

All county convenience centers and landfills are currently closed until further notice. Waste pickup is suspended until after the storm. All airports, beaches, public parks, libraries, and marinas are closed. All government offices including the courthouse remain closed until further notice.

Sebastian River Medical Center has evacuated, but the emergency room will remain open. Cleveland Clinic Indian River remains open.

FPL told Sebastian Daily that they have 17,000 workers ready to restore power.
