A former student was taken into custody on Monday after causing a disturbance at Sebastian River High School.
The individual was identified as 21-year-old Alani Christine Palmer.
According to a statement from Principal Christopher Cummings, Palmer gained access to the school through the main entrance with the assistance of another student.
Once inside, Palmer entered a teacher’s classroom, overturning desks and disrupting the class.
“The teacher, recognizing the situation, immediately notified administration and security, and quickly cleared the classroom of all students to ensure their safety. Thanks to the swift action of our administration and the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, the individual was promptly detained,” the School District said in a statement.
School administrators and security were immediately notified and swiftly evacuated the classroom to ensure student safety. Palmer was subsequently detained by the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
Palmer faces charges of trespassing on school property and disrupting a school function. The student who allowed Palmer into the building has been identified, but it is unclear if they will face disciplinary action.
“We want to assure you that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We are taking all necessary steps to prevent incidents like this from happening in the future. We are also working closely with law enforcement to address this situation thoroughly,” the School District said.
