Editorial: Squid Lips in Sebastian is here to stay

Squid Lips in Sebastian, Florida.

A few weeks ago, we published an article about a real estate auction involving the property where Squid Lips is located. The article informed everyone that the restaurant was not part of the auction, and their lease had already been extended for another 15 years.

The problem with this article is that many people read the headline without reading the content. As a result, many people assumed that Squid Lips was up for auction or closing.

Well, that was never the case. As the article pointed out, the auction was solely about the real estate and not the establishment itself.

I then spoke with Squid Lips on Wednesday and they are having a tough time right now after the real estate auction. Many patrons still think the restaurant is closing. Also, they have employment opportunities, and many people didn’t apply thinking they were going out of business.

I told Squid Lips that Sebastian Daily would publish this Editorial as a reminder that the restaurant is not closing. They didn’t ask us to do this, but I felt it was important for them and our readers.

Article titles are one of the biggest challenges for our staff because we are restricted to 70 characters or so for a title. We’re not the only news organization with this problem as I have spoken with the editor at Florida Today and some of the reporters at TCPalm.

We all need to work on our headlines because we don’t want to be labeled “fake news.” We work extra hard to bring our readers the truth, and honesty has been a big reason for our continued growth at Sebastian Daily.

If we publish something that sends a different message, we will fix it, and that’s what this Editorial is about.

A great title and headline would explain everything inside the article in 70 characters. Sometimes this isn’t easy, but we will promise to work on it.
