While visiting Indian River County on Thursday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said the state would soon receive 250,000 additional doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

DeSantis said he hopes to double the doses in Indian River County. The Florida governor also said he wanted to see more vaccines distributed to the senior population.

DeSantis was in town to visit the Indian River County Fairgrounds, where the shots are administered, and to talk with county health officials.

In Sebastian, residents are frustrated over the low availability of the COVID-19 vaccines. The county sends out an alert message to notify residents that appointments are available. But they are “full” within minutes.

“Are the seniors in our county really that quick off the mark to get appointments online,” a resident asked Sebastian Daily.

Some seniors in Sebastian believe the county should prioritize age groups first, starting with age 80, then 65 and older.

As of right now, all seniors 65 and older can get the dosage when they are available by making an appointment. However, they are not taking appointments until the shots are available.

Sebastian Daily will continue with updates as more information becomes available.
