The Exchange Club of Sebastian recognizes students who demonstrate good citizenship at school and home for their Young Citizenship Award. The program was created to recognize and encourage honest, hard-working, helpful, and fair youngsters.
It is an effective tool for teachers to motivate promising students further, and it gives the Sebastian Exchange Club an enjoyable opportunity to supply encouragement.
In October, they recognized Derin Julmiste from Sebastian Charter Junior High School; Lilly Daley from Sebastian River Middle School; Lindsay Bieber from Storm Grove Middle School, and Haley Macleary & Obed Philippe from Sebastian River High School.
Derin Julmiste of Sebastian Charter Junior High School
Derin Julmiste is a positive light at Sebastian Charter Junior High who is responsible and respectful to his peers and leaders. He is cherished, applauded, and respected by those who cross his path.
During a SCJH assembly in October, Derin was presented with his Student of the Month award, and the entire student body un-provokingly erupted into a meaningful roar of cheers. Everyone in the school recognizes that Derin lives by his motto, “actions speak louder than words.”
Lilly Daley of Sebastian River Middle School
Lilly Daley is committed to her academics and is also the captain of her cheerleading squad. She was chosen as the captain because she is dedicated to creating and solidifying the team.
She is kind and compassionate and always behaves with dignity and honor.
She volunteers with fundraising and other cheerleading activities outside of school, is accomplished in sports, and has repeatedly been recognized at Science Fair over the years.
Lilly cares about her peers and teachers, is always principled, and is highly knowledgeable. She always comes to class with a positive attitude and is ready to learn.
Lindsay Bieber of Storm Grove Middle School
Lindsay Bieber is taking high school-level courses at Storm Grove Middle School. She is hard-working and makes her achievements look easy. She is always willing to help others and is also a student-athlete. Lindsay is a shining light and a fantastic young lady.
Youth of the Month Awards
The Youth of the Month Award recognizes hard-working Sebastian River High School students who attain high levels of academic achievement, community involvement, and leadership. In addition, the program incentivizes other youngsters to strive for equally high levels of achievement.
Obed Philippe of Sebastian River High School
Obed Philippe is an IB Diploma Candidate, a member of the National Honor Society, an AP Scholar, and a Class Representative. Additionally, he is a member of the African American Student Council and Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council.
Outside of school, Obed is an active church member and leads his youth group. In his spare time, Obed loves to read and play piano.
Obed got his work ethic from his parents, who moved to America from Haiti 23 years ago. He hopes to attend Florida Southern or Southeast University to study Psychology. He wants to help the next generation of kids make a positive change in this world.
Haley Macleary of Sebastian River High School
Haley Macleary is an IB Diploma Candidate in the top 5% of her class. She is a member of the National Honor Society and a Historian for the Excel Club. At CTE Symposium Night, she was selected to represent Biotech and set up a station for parents and upcoming 10th graders looking for a good CTE program.
Haley is a girl’s weightlifting team member, placing 4th in Districts and attending regionals. In addition, she is a lifeguard at North County Pool, a childcare provider locally, and volunteers for a non-profit cat adoption agency.
In accepting her award, Haley thanked Sebastian Exchange Club for this opportunity, her teachers for selecting her, and her parents for their support. She plans to attend Eckerd College and pursue a career in Environmental Science.
Exchange Club of Sebastian
The Exchange Club of Sebastian is a not-for-profit service organization that works to serve the community and promote its National project, “The Prevention of Child Abuse.”
In addition, they offer scholarships to local students and contribute to various school programs here in Indian River County. They raise most of these funds with their Annual Blue Water Fishing Tournament in June.
